Path of Truancy

“Life moves pretty fast. If you don’t stop and look around once in a while, you could miss it.” – Ferris Bueller

Yep, I’m forcing my 13-year-old daughter to skip school after lunch today so we can see a volleyball game.

When she left this morning, she asked, “so mom, am I going to be sick, have a doctor’s appointment, or did someone die?”

Is it not my legal right to call the school and tell them plain and simple, “Grace will not be in school this afternoon because we’re going to see a volleyball game.” Anyone, anyone, anyone? Well, can I?

    Hey, Amy!
By law, I think 180 days of instruction are required to say one attended school that year. I think missing 179 days due to any cause could be a bit much, but I know you have made multiple learning opportunities available to all 3 of your kids during non-school days. Calling to say Grace will miss school due to your family commitment would be telling the truth. Spending time with each other is priceless!

Well said Kathy! Grace will be absent this afternoon due to a “family commitment.” I hope this doesn’t become a habit with me:) Parent approved truancy is like a gateway drug, right? :-)

When the kids were pretty small, I called to let the school know that they would be absent in the morning because we had an appointment. I didn’t indicate what kind of an appointment (and calling early in the morning so you can just leave a message on the machine is very helpful). We may have gone sledding. I have a friend who would take her kids out of school on the first really nice spring afternoon (for an “appointment”) and they flew kites.

My kids prefer to think that I’m teaching them how to be good liars. I have never let them skip school to go sledding, but that sounds wonderful right now!! We saw the Alter vball game. They played so well in game 1 & 2 – games 3 & 4 became sloppy, and game 5 I completely forgot it only went to 15 – they lost by 4. One of these days I’ll remember everything:)
